About Søren J. Søndergaard

A presentation of the artist and his works from 1994 til now.

The works of Søren J. Søndergaard are far from mainstream and the influence of dictates made by art fashion. The thoroughly executed and time-consuming paintings insist on the viewer's participation, and few are left untouched when encountering the subtle, intense and sometimes ambiguous nature of the images he create. He is convinced that artistic skills precondition the validity of the work and it's ability to become art, and contrary to the modern assertion that there can be be art without a work, he claims - while striving for timelessness - that there cannot be art without a work.

Søren Søndergaard...tells stories of this our living world's insignificance compared to Heaven. Little naked angelic creatures - with or without wings - quietly investigates, when nobody looks, the filth and stupidity of our everyday, made by man. To look at these crisp and hazy paintings through ordinary narrowminded eyes, is like peeping at the mystery of creation through a keyhole.

Lise Seisbøll, MA. Extract from review, Fyens Stiftstidende Sep. 14th. 1996.

The works of Søren Søndergaard were through the 1980's an extension of postwar international abstract expressionism, influenced by artists such as Asger Jorn, Karel Appel, Archile Gorky and Willem de Kooning. Also the Nordic figurative expressionists, i.e. Edvard Munch and Jens Søndergaard, were influential. Today S. works in a figurative manner, among others inspired by Goya and Edward Hopper... and their exposure of a meaningless civilization.
